Copyright? Isbn? Barcode? Do I Need All This?

What is a copyright? A copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression.  Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.  It protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture.

How is copyright different from a patent or trademark? Copyright protects original works of authorship, while a patent protects inventions or discoveries; trademark protects words, phrases, symbols, or designs identifying the source of the goods or services of one party and distinguishing them from others.

Why should I register my work? Many choose to register their works because they wish to have the facts of their copyright on the public record and have a certificate of registration.  Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney’s fees in successful litigation.

The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a 13-digit number assigned by standard book numbering agencies to control and facilitate activities within the publishing industry.  Its purpose is to identify one title from another allowing for more efficient marketing of products by booksellers, libraries, universities, wholesalers and distributors.

A barcode is a graphical coded representation of your book’s ISBN that allows automated scanning and point of sale transactions. It’s recommended so when scanned at a store at the time of purchase, the barcode helps the vendor to maintain inventory and track sales.

The answer to your question is an easy one… YES!

Now it’s time to determine if you need a cover designed for your book and/or illustrations for the interior. Most people need a cover designed in order to properly portray the theme or subject matter of the book. Book illustration costs can range based on numerous factors including the page size, style of drawing, the number of characters drawn and the complexity of the illustrations.

Completed Your Book - Now What?

Trying to decide the next step can be burdensome, especially if this is your first book. Having to peruse the internet through countless websites in search of companies that will edit, publish, distribute and market your book can take many months and sometimes years.  We are here to make this easier for you by supplying all of the services you need in one place. Let’s start with the first step in this process – EDITING.

This may involve moving, deleting, adding, rewriting entire paragraphs and chapters of the manuscript. It’s time to decide what type of editing you want done and how much you are prepared to spend. Pricing per word can range on average from $.02 to $.75 which can cost on average $4-$5 per page. Sample the pricing model to the left and see how much it can cost to have your manuscript edited.

Printing and Binding Options?

Now it’s time to make the decision on how you want your book to look?  Depending on the type of book also determines the look.  For example, a children’s book with many pictures most likely will have a color interior and exterior; many times the cover is a hardback book.  You will have a variety of options to choose from such as trim size, interior color,  paper weight and type,  binding type, gloss or matte finish, book thickness determined by page count and how many printed copies you may want.

Additional Services?

Want to advertise your book or share the author’s story?  Have a video created!  A book teaser gives a taste of the story that leaves the reader wanting more.  A book trailer is a major marketing tool and is a reproduction of the wonderful experience of opening the book and feeling as though they are a part of the book.  An author video allows people to get to know the author and their works.  Another option is an author website that gives all the information about the author and their current and upcoming books.  View the sample book teaser to the right and take a look at our Marketing Section.
